Via Allegro 1750 The Queensway West, Toronto 416-622-6677
You would never guess that what lies inside this strip mall façade is an icon of Italian fine dining and home to one of the most prestigious wine lists in the world. Recognized by a Wine Spectator Grand Award since 2003, they have long had a reputation as a destination dining room. It’s a place to discover rare treasures in wine and indulge your palate with extraordinary Italian cuisine. The selection ranges from traditional classics to exciting interpretations, with specialties like Amarone Lamb, whole roasted fish, truffled risotto, house made sausage, fresh pastas and more. The décor is contemporary European, with plenty of rich dark wood and cast iron accents that warm the room with the perfect balance of shadow and light. Wine aficionados will feel like they’ve found nirvana, with a selection of well over five thousand bottles and a team of sommeliers on staff to help you navigate. Chef’s tasting menus are available, and be sure to explore the selection of Italian cheeses and desserts like house made gelato and Nutella tiramisu. Nowhere else will you find almost five hundred selections of Ontario wine alone, plus verticals of the best in Italian wines as well as top Burgundy, and Bordeaux Grands Crus that date back to 1893. Located officially in Etobicoke, Via Allegro is located on the outskirts of the Sherway Gardens shopping plaza. It’s a five-minute drive from Toronto Pearson airport or from the heart of Mississauga’s downtown. Call for reservations.
Breakwater at the Waterside Inn 15 Stavebank Rd. South, Mississauga 905-891-6225
As elegant as it gets, the Breakwater aims high and hits the mark with white linen and attentively transparent service. High ceilings and an airy atmosphere lend a sense of opulence, but while the Waterside Inn is indeed on the shores of Lake Ontario, not all seating offers a lakeside view. View notwithstanding, you’ll find lots of locally sourced, organic and sustainable items on the menu, including a spectacular tableside prepared Chateaubriand for two, veal saltimbocca, fresh caught Canadian Pickerel or a perfectly prepared spaghetti Bolognese. The wine list is well balanced, with a good selection of wines that include half bottles, large format bottles and a range of price selections between thirty dollars and almost two thousand dollars. Last but certainly not least, they even serve breakfast, and play host to a sumptuous Sunday brunch buffet, complete with prime rib carving stations, omelet and waffle stations and more. Call for reservations by phone at 905-891-6225 or by email.
